10 photos do not do this hike justice in the slightest, I could have easily put 50 up. This is without a doubt the best hike I have done in Washington, and probably a top 10 hike I've ever done. If you find a window in the next 2 weeks (look at Sunday...) I highly recommend trying to go if you want to see these fall colours. If not, get it on the list for next year.

This was an amazing hike with constant views, loads of lakes/tarns and a fun little ridge ramble at the end. Highly recommended! Best done as an overnight (lots of camping spots) if you don't want to drive so far in a day. Loads of other peaks at Snoqualmie Pass if you prefer to car camp. I shall return no doubt!

The Chain Lakes Loop is one of the best, relativel

The Chain Lakes Loop is one of the best, relatively easy hikes anywhere in Washington. Despite the fact this is across the border, it's actually easier to reach from the Lower Mainland than most of Washington, and isn't much further than the likes of Whistler or the Chilliwack Valley for anyone in Vancouver.

This hike is so good because you start at Artist Point, which is so high up that the views are immediately incredible. I tacked on Table Mountain, a short addition that is well worth the effort, but not really necessary if you want to keep life simple.

The hike circumnavigates Table, following a mostly benign trail with insanely good views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan practically the entire hike. You'll drop down to a series of nice lakes before a steep(ish) climb up to Herman Pass. From here on its all downhill to Bagley Lake, with Shuksan offering an omnipresent backdrop towering above.

The last portion is a fairly steep grunt back to the car, but if you're in a group, you only need to send one sucker up to get the car while the rest wait down at Bagley Lake 😄

This hike is very popular (for good reason), and the parking can fill up quickly on a weekend. In the fall, it becomes even more breathtaking, with the slopes filling with red, orange, and yellow hues.

Overall, if anyone ever asks me for an easy, scenic, beginner friendly hike, this is what I will recommend. The only drawback is that the signage is fairly lacking, so you should probably still bring an offline map if you're not familiar with the area. Details on the blog as usual.

It feels like truly eons ago (6 weeks) now that I hiked up Goat Mountain in Chilliwack. This follows the popular Goat Ridge trail, then continues along the ridge all the way to the top. This has gained a bit of a reputation for being one of the hardest hikes (amongst many) in the Chilliwack Valley, and I can see why.

The ascent up to the ridge is relentlessly steep, covering some heinous, dusty, slippy terrain and a few rope sections. Go and read some AllTrails reviews about those for a good chuckle. You pass by the famous IG spot (Pic 9) before continuing up along the ridge. The climb feels never-ending, and I was pretty beat by the time I reached the end of the Goat Ridge trail (the first prominent bump along Goat Ridge). The true peak looked far away, and I was close to bailing, but not wanting to do this hike again, I soldiered on.

The remaining hike involves some fairly simple scrambling and route finding, but all in all, it was easier than I had expected, which was a plus. It also wasn't as long or tiring as expected. The worst is by far the climb to the ridge. I soon summited to a cacophony of mosquitos and didn't get much chance to enjoy what I'd earned. Usually the valley is kind to me with bugs, but not on this day. I also had the first forest fire smoke of the season to unexpectedly contend with.

After a quick summit stop, I began heading back, which wasn't too bad until the steep, loose & sandy terrain towards the end. This is a truly grim experience and one I'm glad I won't have to go through again. I have never been so utterly filthy on a hike as I was on Goat Ridge. The only solace is there's a creek at the end to bathe in, which I did, before licking my wounds at Banter Ice Cream.

While the views up top are undoubtedly rewarding, I can see why many say this is a once and done kind of hike!

When England were playing in the Euro 2024 final,

When England were playing in the Euro 2024 final, I was looking for a hike that would have me home by midday to watch it. I don't have many short hikes nearby that I haven't done a bunch of times already, then I remembered Park Butte.

Nearby it certainly is not, so I drove over the evening before and slept in the car at the trailhead, with the plan of ascending for sunrise, leaving me plenty of time to drive home in time for the match.

The 3.15am alarm went off, and I set off in the dark. Thankfully, this is a very easy trail to follow the whole way, so navigation wasn't an issue. It's also only around 6.5km to the top, so within an hour and a half I was almost there as daylight started to break.

The Park Butte Lookout is a FCFS historic fire lookout that you can sleep in, and it's very popular. It was full of people all sleeping (and missing the sunrise), so I headed further along the ridge to a nice vantage point to enjoy the sunrise adjacent to Mount Baker on my own.

I stayed for around an hour as the skies changed colour, then once the show was over, I scampered back down, returning to the trailhead before it was even 8am 😄 Now that's a first.

With a couple of stops on the way back, I made it home in time to watch England lose another final, so all the logistical juggling wasn't exactly worth it. Nonetheless, Park Butte is a nice little spot if you want an easy hike to rewarding views, and it's also great for camping. Deets on the blog if you're interested.

Okay, well I'm about 10 hikes behind in terms of posting my trips here, which is pretty much par for the course during the summer 😄 I'll eventually catch up, probably once the autumn rolls around. If you want more timely updates, then join the SWBC Peakbagger group on FB, or follow my blog (which is still behind, but less so).

Back in early July, when I wanted to avoid snow and bugs, I headed down to the North Cascades for Trappers Peak, which a few people had said is a very high bang for your buck hike. It's short, steep, and pretty straightforward. Typical Washington.

There's some easy scrambling towards the end, nothing that most parties would have any issue with, and I have to agree the views from the top were pretty sweet, despite this being a rather low summit. Excellent views of the Southern Pickets, Mount Triumph, and Thornton Peak in particular. You could also drop down to Thornton Lake if you wish, but I didn't bother.

Instead, I opted to explore the ridge further, heading over to X Mountain. This involves a tricky drop off Trappers via a steep heather scramble. Finding the right way was a bit finicky, but once you do, it's easy enough. It's then a simple and scenic ridge walk over to X, which offered even better views than Trappers. Heading back up the heather scramble was a bit trickier but still perfectly manageable.

Round trip was around 19km and a little over 1,200m gain. 6 hours c2c as this is an efficient climb.

A few weeks ago, I had my first foray into the Stein Valley area, after many years of procrastinating (mostly due to the long drive). There's a few semi-popular hikes around Blowdown Pass, with Gott and Gotcha Peak probably being the standard option. My partners had already done those, so we instead opted to hike up Cottonwood Peak.

The hike begins on the same trail as Gott/Gotcha, up to Blowdown Pass, passing by Blowdown Lake on the way. A lot of parties will camp at the lake to break up the long drive/hike over two days, but it's easily doable in a day if you don't mind an early start.

From the pass, you drop down into the valley following an old road, before climbing up to the ridge through some light bush. Once on the ridge it's easy travel along a series of bumps towards the peak. The drop off the last bump is steep but still easy, then the climb up to summit is just hiking.

The views throughout the day are fantastic and constant, given you park at 1,600m. You can actually drive all the way to the pass in a capable 4x4 that you don't mind scratching, which would make this a very easy day. Otherwise, most SUVs should be fine to reach the standard trailhead.

I'll certainly be back in the area for Gott and Gotcha, and there are several other peaks around to allow for multiple returns. Details on the blog for those interested.

A few weeks ago, we hiked up Colchuck Peak in the Enchantments. I was happy to return to one of my favourite places for this hike.

We slept at the trailhead and arose early, setting off at sunrise (4.45) to ensure favorable conditions on the glacier and to allow plenty of time to finish. The hike up to the lake was unusually tiring, and I immediately regretted wearing long pants.

After a nice break at the always scenic Colchuck Lake, with a mountain goat encounter to boot, we circled the lake and climbed up the boulder field. This was a bit tedious but fairly short-lived, and once we reached the snowline, we put on crampons and helmets for the glacier.

The glacier ascent was a lot easier than expected, not all that steep and no crevasses. This is a rapidly dying glacier, unfortunately, and it may not last a lot longer.

From Banshee Pass, the route up Colchuck looked easier than I had thought as well. I had anticipated some Class 3 scrambling with exposure, but it wasn't that at all. Mostly just hiking, some brief Class 2 and minimal exposure, if any. The final push to the summit is a simple plod. Views from the top are exceptional of Mount Stuart in particular.

After a quick break, we headed back down to the pass, where Ben and Lena were continuing on to Dragontail. I returned down by myself, which was easy but tiring. Down to the lake was steep, but the worst was from the lake to the trailhead. I'm not sure why this was so brutal. It felt like it went on forever, and the terrain was slow going, despite being downhill.

As usual at this time of year, I'm well behind on updating IG on my recent hikes. A few weeks ago I explored some trails in the Coquihalla, specifically the 10K Snowmobile Road to Bedpost Peak. I didn't really know what the status of this road would be in summer, but suffice it to say you can easily follow the road practically the entire way to the summit, and a 4x4 could drive a chunk of it.

Bedpost alone is very straightforward and offers pretty nice views from the top of the Coquihalla Mountain massif and most of the other peaks in the area. My plan was to continue on to Spiral Peak, which looked far away and involved a 300m drop that would need reclimbing on the way back. I almost bailed on it, but with plenty of time to spare, I pushed on.

The route off Bedpost isn't obvious, with scant trail, so I ended up in bush for a brief spell. Lingering snow didn't help here as it covered what I suspect would be the faint trail. Either way, I eventually made it down and followed the Gardner trail around to the base of Spiral Peak. This is a mess of loose talus with some easy Class 2 scrambling, and thankfully was short-lived. The views were nice, perhaps slightly better than Bedpost, but it's definitely more of a peakbagger peak as it's hard to say the added effort was worth it.

All that was left was reclimbing Bedpost and hiking back out, which wasn't as annoying as expected. All in all, it is an enjoyable day to an always scenic area.

Day 2 of my time in the Teanaways was an easier but possibly more scenic outing up Iron Peak. This is a short, steep but simple hike up to a pretty nice peak, with great views of Mount Stuart, Teanaway Peak and Bill's Peak, to name a few.

I also scouted out Teanaway Peak next door, though this was mostly a decision on the fly, and I didn't really know what to expect. After ascending part way up, I found myself on the wrong side of a ravine with some pretty technical terrain around, and I could see tracks in a steep snowy traverse ahead. Solo and without an ice axe/helmet I decided to call it and head back down.

I must have finished this hike in around 4 hours or so, making it back to the car by 10am for the long drive home. All in all, the Teanaways is a great spot that I highly recommend for a couple of days getaway. Details on the blog if interested.

I took a little road trip down to the Teanaways in Washington a couple of weeks ago, mostly to escape the snow that lingers here in BC. The Teanaways are generally warmer and drier, and thus any snow generally melts there earlier in the year. There's tons of peaks to climb here, so I'm sure I'll be back several times to explore more.

On day 1 I decided to hike up Navaho Peak, which has a trail the entire way. After reading some trip reports, I learned that you can link it to Freedom and Miller Peak via a gentle, open ridge that is mostly hiking, with some very easy class 2 scrambling over Freedom. I always prefer loops and ridge walks, so this was an easy sell for three peaks.

I started late on day 1 due to the 4.5 hour drive, and most the hike is sun exposed. In the summer it might be pretty hot with little water available, but it wasn't so bad in spring with some snow and creeks flowing. Miller Peak was an easy but steep hike up, and then the ridge over to Freedom was straightforward. The short scramble was simple, and the views kept improving as I neared Navaho. After another easy ridge jaunt, some of which had snow on, I summitted Navaho to excellent views of the Stuart range in the Enchantments, as well as Mount Rainier and even Mount Adams.

The hike back out was a long old slog, with tons of campers heading up to enjoy the meadows below the summit.

C2C was 26.5km, 1,800m and 8 hours. I then drove to a car camping spot where I stayed the night before the next trip the following day which I'll post separately. Details of Navaho on the blog for those interested.

A couple of weeks ago, we headed down to Stevens Pass in Washington for a simple Type 1 outing to Rock Mountain 🪨.

This is a very straightforward hike following your typically groomed WA trail. We were pleasantly surprised at how high the snowline was (1,550m), and with the wildflowers starting to bloom down low on the switchbacks. Without any need for snowshoes or even spikes, this was the first time it felt like summer on a hike this year (despite the snow).

The entire hike is sun exposed, so in the middle of summer it might be a pretty hot one, but in the conditions we had it was perfect, offering constant views from the get-go.

Rock is a short hike that we finished in 5 hours 45 mins, but you can feasibly add on other peaks in the area (Mastiff, Howard) to make it a bigger outing. With the long drive from Vancouver, I'd probably return and do an overnight in the area, as there are several other peaks you can climb (such as Labyrinth, which I did last year and is 👌).

Now that summer is ramping up, I'll probably be heading out more frequently and trying to keep up with posting here (something I am not very good at!).
